Dr. Lachmann is Professor of Experimental Anaesthesiology at the Institute of Anaesthesiology, Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is a specialist in clinical physiology with special reference to acute lung diseases in newborn infants and adults, surfactant replacement therapy, lung function during mechanical ventilation, optimalization of mechanical ventilation in patients with respiratory distress syndrome, and xenon anaesthesia.
He has published about 320 scientific papers, including review articles and book chapters, most of which address different aspects of pathophysiology and therapy in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine, and pneumology. Over the years Dr. Lachmann has been a prominent speaker (about 400 invited lectures), seminar leader and chairman at hundreds of international scientific congresses and has received several scientific awards. In addition he is an honorary member of various national societies.
Dr. Lachmann received his MD and PhD from the Humboldt University, Berlin; and an additional degree in medical science (Dr. med. sci) from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm.
